Purchase Price
Initial cost price is a key component of any machine’s total cost of ownership. Self-contained ride-on mowers are often dedicated to one mowing application or area of the course. At approx. $115-$150K USD (and climbing) it’s a large capital outlay for limited versatility. A Trimax Snake is significantly cheaper and often both a new tractor and a Trimax Snake can be purchased for less than one self-contained unit.
Productivity and performance
Productivity of machinery is measured at the rate at which the work is performed. Key variables may include overall cutting width, operating speed and versatility (can the machine do all the work required?).
The Trimax Snake can mow faster in heavy conditions due to the deep deck design, processing higher volumes of grass without clumping. The Trimax Snake can also be uncoupled from the tractor allowing the tractor to be used for other purposes. Cut quality is often improved due to full width deck rollers which reduce scalping and allow decks to hang over bunker edges. Self-propelled units often run on castor wheels which can fall into dips causing blade strike and turf damage.
Trimax owners also tell us the Snake is a great back-up mower for fairways, as it can easily drop in height allowing fairway mowing when cylinder mowers are out of action or the conditions are too wet for the use of cylinder mowers. Maintenance and Servicing
Understanding the machine’s maintenance requirements prior to purchase is important to total cost of ownership. How many grease points does the machine have? How frequently is greasing required? How accessible are the grease points? You may be surprised at the results when you tally up the low greasing requirements of the Trimax Snake compared to self-contained units.
When it comes to consumable parts, the Trimax Snake has small LazerBladez, which makes replacement costs much lower compared to replacing full bar blade beams. Also, Trimax Snake decks are not hydraulically driven, so this means less trips back to the workshop to change hoses, and belts can be changed easily in the field.
Residual Value
Residual value (or resale value) is the price you get for the equipment when it’s time to replace it. The Trimax Snake has a long service life exceeding seven years, and a much higher residual value percentage compared to self-contained units.
Assess the availability of second-hand Snakes on the market compared to self-contained equipment. Often second hand Trimax Snakes will fetch over 50% of the original purchase price and are hard to come-by, whereas self-contained units which don’t wear as well flood the second-hand market at a fraction of their original price.
